Horse Collectables
Horses have been with us for many years, visit the house of any horse enthusiast and I am sure you will find a figurine or brasses somewhere in the house. There are many types of horse collectables, the more popular types are figurines and horse brasses.
You can f ind horses brasses hang
ing from the walls in any antique shop, and they come in many different patterns, some are themed with animal characters, flowers, stars, circles have all been used.
Horse brasses make great decorations on ladies bags and gents belts.. I still think they look better in the place where they are meant to be on the horses tack.
Figurines are another very popular horse collectable, they range from cartoon type ponies to soldiers dressed in their finest uniforms sat on their chargers, many of the figures are of famous horses.
It is quite easy to create a collection of hundreds of these figurines, many collectors gather to show off their models, and even redesigning the models. You can find clubs where enthusiasts get together, many clubs run points systems, a record of the points earned for the participants horse is kept, and an award presentation is held at the end of the year.
There are live shows and there are postal shows, to enter a postal show the collector takes a photo of their model and sends it in for judging, the quality of the photo and the accuracy of the breed are what the judges are looking for.
At live shows many of the participants take along props for their display, the judges are looking for condition and correctness of bread.
The Internet is making it easy for people for all areas to take part in these competitions, participants submit a photo of their model for judging, and again the photos are judged on accuracy of the bread and quality of the photo..
These are just a couple examples of horse collectables that you will see the horse enthusiast collecting, the race enthusiast might be a collector of race programs
Three Favourite Horse Movies
One of the best known movie horses was actually a non-existent one! ‘ A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!’ is Richard III’s cry when he desperately needs a horse to escape from those who would kill him on Bosworth Field.Quite different, however, from the evil Richard and his non-existent horse are the three we meet in these movies. While life in Richard III’s time may have been bloodier and generally a great deal more perilous, at least they didn’t have to worry about the necessities of veterinary bills or horse insurance!
The Black Stallion
Produced in 1979 – some 400 years after Shakespeare – this film deservedly won many awards. The unfolding relationship between Alec and a vigorous Arabian stallion forms the basis of this movie. Especially memorable is the shipwreck scene and Alec’s subsequent rescue from drowning by the horse and the ensuing time on a desert island where they learn to overcome the mistrust they previously felt for each other. They become inseparable as they develop this total trust. It’s a wonderful portrayal of the deep bonds that can exist between man (well,’boy’) and horse. I don’t want to spoil the movie for you if you haven’t yet seen it. Possibly ‘the greatest children’s movie ever made’ was the opinion of one critic. However, you can still enjoy the film even though you are not a child.
Black Beauty
Why do so many horses have to be black?. ‘Piebald Beauty’ as a title looks a bit flat.
Whatever, in this 1994 production it is Black Beauty herself who narrates so we don’t see her from the outside as we did with the Black Stallion. The trouble – or one of them – is that the voice is so obviously human. This isn’t a complaint about the nature of the voice; if it sounded like a horse, any cinema would soon lose its audience. No, it’s what the horse says and how it’s said that grates. The human that Black Beauty portrays is that of a self-satisfied and rather smug person. Making a horse think and speak as though it were a human is not at all convincing. If you can ignore what a critic called ’soppiness’, you can certainly enjoy the great scenes of Montana and of Black Beauty’s athleticism.
The Horse Whisperer
This film was issued 4 years later, in 1998. Grace and her precious horse, Pilgrim, recover from a terrible accident in this film. Following this accident, Grace’s mother, Annie, takes daughter and horse to the wide open spaces of Montana to seek the help of a man, Tom, who’s renowned for his ability to empathize with troubled horses. His ability to get emotionally close is not, however, confined to horses; it extends to troubled females. It doesn’t take long for both Annie and Pilgrim to become devoted to him. The contrast between Annie’s previous sophisticated city life and that of the country is a theme that is developed alongside the story of Grace and Pilgrim’s recovery and the growing love between Annie and Tom. On the one hand is Tom, the plain horse whisperer, on the other is the suave lawyer; Annie must choose one of them. Who will she choose?!
It’s not only the horses that are moving – whether galloping, cantering, or trotting – it’s also some of the more emotional scenes. Although there is great beauty in many of the sequences, you could be moved to tears or mirth by some of the ‘moving’ moments. These movies are not, however, only about horses; each also conveys a message. Only you can decide the nature of the message and whether or not it’s a help or a hindrance to the story of the horse. Order three DVD’s from your local store and you can decide for yourself!
